Husky fans hate duck…but can’t spell

I have not posted in awhile so I needed a kick in the butt….Watched the Rose Bowl last week and was with some real hostile anti-Oregon fans… I found this odd because none of them went to Ohio State and most of them did not go to a college that competes against Oregon. They were all Washington residents & from what I gather, people from Washington do not like Oregon.
They like Oregon when they hop the border to buy big ticket items because Oregon has no sales tax. They like Oregon’s gorgeous coast, Oregon’s great micro brew, but they just don’t like Oregon. Oh, and as you can tell by the photo, their spelling isn’t the best!
Thank goodness my Badgers won their bowl game (and yes I actually went to the school I cheered on). Go Badgers!!!!

Football

Wow…Bittersweet….

I love football….Love the Greenbay Packers….Still love Favre (sorry)….BUT & it is a big BUT, my twins started football for the first time this year (6th grade football) & I was excited, bummed & scared…

Bummed, because I have been their head soccer coach for the last 7 years & have loved it and they have done great. Zack has been an all-around star…scoring & defense & Reilly has really become a great goalie. Zack has gotten to play almost every minute of every game and has been phenomenal ~ We have won some games 7-0 where Zack has scored all 7 goals & Reilly has had 15 saves…. I loved coaching them sooooo much.

Now, I love football & would love to be on the sidelines watching & taking video & photos….BUT, with football their playing time could be very limited. They definitely will have different roles. Since Reilly is bigger he’d have to be a defensive or offensive lineman (or both ~ he cannot carry a ball because of weight restrictions the league has). Zack could easily be a wide reciever, safety, kicker or even a quarterback…. He has a great arm and can throw a long killer spiral & has speed (He is Michael Vick without the dog cruelty).

Now the scared….I’m scared they will get a big injury…I have friends with kids that have had MAJOR broken bones….At least they are 6th graders on a 5th-6th grade team ~ so hopefully they will be a bit bigger….

We just kicked off the season & I am PUMPED…I hope they get lots of playing time, have lots of fun & don’t get injured!

Go Wildcats!

Tiger & Me

My goofy Tiger story….

Our company was holding our annual meeting in San Francisco and at the same time The WGC American Express Championship was happening. We were staying at The Fairmont (pretty swanky) and so were some of the golfers I was pretty busy working most the week because I had some major projects going on. I was actually pretty pissed because everyone kept saying “guess who I saw” and “I met.” While everyone was seeing all these people, I didn’t see anyone ~ I was feeling pretty unlucky.

picture-1

Well all my major stuff was wrapped up and the group had the afternoon off. I decided to take advantage of that with some others and go down some beers and a couple martini’s to celebrate a great job! So, I have a pretty good buzz going (a really good buzz) and head back to the hotel. I get to the bank of elevators & it’s crowded. I look over my shoulder and see some shirtless gut with an ice bag wrapped around his shoulder and I think “this is a pretty classy place, what’s this guy thinking….” or something like that ~ remember I’m buzzzzzzed. An elevator opens up and me and shirtless and two other guys hop in ~ not another person joins us….

By this time I’m also pretty tired from a bunch of late nights working and the booze :) ~ now this is only like 5:00 or 6:00 pm. So, I get in the elevator and lean against the wall for support and accidentally press every button. As, we stop at each floor, one of the two guys leans over me to push the “Door Close” buttons ~ He doesn’t look too thrilled. At about Floor 3, I recognize “Door Close” guy as golfer Jim Furyk. And, then I put 2 & 2 together and realize “Shirtless” guy is Tiger Woods (I was expecting a much bigger than life guy & he was pretty close to my size ~ much more muscles though). So, the next time Furyk goes to push “Door Close” button, I say “let me, I feel somewhat to blame for this.” At Floor 11 Furyk and other guy (I’m guessing his caddy) get off elevator.

I’m staying on Floor 38 & Tiger is staying on Floor 36 & we are stopping at every floor along the way, so we have a lot of quality time together. We chatted a bit and I asked how it was going and he said o.k. And, finally I said can I take your photo & he said he’d prefer I didn’t, so I didn’t. At this time in the tournament it was close and John Daly was doing really well. I wished him luck & told him I hope he wins. I asked what happened to his shoulder and he told me it was pretty sore….A lot of small talk…He was VERY, VERY Nice….

Then as he was about to get off the elevator I asked him if I could get his autograph ~ Then I said the bone-head comment “I don’t really want it, it’s for my kids….” and he still said no problem…But I had nothing on me except a cd from the project I was working on all week. So, I grabbed a pen and he signed the CD sleeve & I thanked him & said I hope you win!

Tiger ended up beating John Daly the next day in a playoff (LINK TO SCORES) & I feel a lot of it had to do with our little pep talk!

I found this story to be quite funny…..

Three Ducks basketball players accused of shooting at ducks in park

by Kevin Hudson, The Oregonian, March 31, 2009

Three Oregon men’s basketball players were cited Monday night in Eugene’s Alton Baker Park for shooting BB guns at ducks and geese in the park’s pond.

Officers responded to a report of men shooting guns in the park at 11:08 p.m. and arrived to witness freshman forward Josh Crittle fire approximately 20 shots toward the pond with a BB gun, said Jenna LaBounty, a spokeswoman with the Eugene Police Department.

Crittle was cited along with fellow freshmen Michael Dunigan and Teondre Williams on an accusation of violating park rules, which carries a base fine of $155.

LaBounty said that when the officers approached, Dunigan tossed his weapon into the water, where officers found it. Williams’ weapon was also located by the six officers who responded.

Crittle, Dunigan and Williams were handcuffed, cited and released within 30 minutes late Monday.

LaBounty said it did not appear any animals were injured in the shooting.

The players are scheduled to appear April 14 in Eugene Municipal Court to face the charges, which are unclassified misdemeanors.

March Madness

Big, big games tomorrow….I’m sooooooo looking forward to the start of March Madness… I am lucky in the fact that some of the 1st games are going to be played right here in Portland. And, I got tickets to the first session… I’ll get to see Washington take on Mississippi State and Purdue vs. Northern Iowa.

The last time I was lucky enough to go to an NCAA Tournament game was when I lived in Milwaukee, WI. Me and a buddy went down to buy some scalped tickets & we ran into someone from a visiting team that asked us to help them sell their tickets. In response to helping them they gave us two tickets ~ And, those free tickets were FRONT row. Needless to say, IT WAS An Awesome experience. AND, that visiting team 15 years ago was none other than Portland State ~ kind of ironic.

I’m really looking forward to tomorrow’s games & depending on how it turns out and our baseball practice schedule I may try and take the kids this weekend. I already have my brackets filled out & am psyched for the BIG DANCE to kick off!!!!

Let the games begin!

O.K…I’ll risk EMBARRASSMENT & RIDICULE! CLICK HERE TO SEE MY BRACKET!

For twins, they are extremely different with very different talents, strengths & weaknesses. I was worried maybe one would make a team and one might not ~ how do we handle that.

Luckily they both made a team & even more luckily the same team. This will definitely make things more logistically better for me :)

I’m very proud of them and sooooo looking forward to the 2009 season. We had our first practice yesterday & it’s non-stop busy from here on and I love it.

They are the best kids I could have ever hoped for & I love watching them participate in sports!

A Great Sports Story!

In a time when there is so many trash stories about sports & athletes the below story really made my day! It also makes me feel great that it happened in Portland with two Northwest Teams – I Love The Northwest! I’ll keep this around and share with my kids down the road as they get more and more into the world of truly competitive sports.

From the Associated Press:

Opponents carry injured home run hitter around the bases

PORTLAND, Ore.: With two runners on base and a strike against her, Sara Tucholsky of Western Oregon University uncorked her best swing and did something she had never done, in high school or college. Her first home run cleared the center-field fence.

But it appeared to be the shortest of dreams come true when she missed first base, started back to tag it and collapsed with a knee injury.

She crawled back to first but could do no more. The first-base coach said she would be called out if her teammates tried to help her. Or, the umpire said, a pinch runner could be called in, and the homer would count as a single.

Then, members of the Central Washington University softball team stunned spectators by carrying Tucholsky around the bases Saturday so the three-run homer would count — an act that contributed to their own elimination from the playoffs.

Central Washington first baseman Mallory Holtman, the career home run leader in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, asked the umpire if she and her teammates could help Tucholsky.

The umpire said there was no rule against it.

So Holtman and shortstop Liz Wallace put their arms under Tucholsky’s legs, and she put her arms over their shoulders. The three headed around the base paths, stopping to let Tucholsky touch each base with her good leg.

“The only thing I remember is that Mallory asked me which leg was the one that hurt,” Tucholsky said. “I told her it was my right leg and she said, ‘OK, we’re going to drop you down gently and you need to touch it with your left leg,’ and I said ‘OK, thank you very much.’”

“She said, ‘You deserve it, you hit it over the fence,’ and we all kind of just laughed.”

“We started laughing when we touched second base,” Holtman said. “I said, ‘I wonder what this must look like to other people.’”

“We didn’t know that she was a senior or that this was her first home run,” Wallace said Wednesday. “That makes the story more touching than it was. We just wanted to help her.”

Holtman said she and Wallace weren’t thinking about the playoff spot, and didn’t consider the gesture something others wouldn’t do.

As for Tucholsky, the 5-foot-2 right fielder was focused on her pain.

“I really didn’t say too much. I was trying to breathe,” she told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Wednesday.

“I didn’t realize what was going on until I had time to sit down and let the pain relax a little bit,” she said. “Then I realized the extent of what I actually did.”

“I hope I would do the same for her in the same situation,” Tucholsky added.

As the trio reached home plate, Tucholsky said, the entire Western Oregon team was in tears.

Central Washington coach Gary Frederick, a 14-year coaching veteran, called the act of sportsmanship “unbelievable.”

For Western Oregon coach Pam Knox, the gesture resolved the dilemma Tucholsky’s injury presented.

“She was going to kill me if we sub and take (the home run) away. But at the same time I was concerned for her. I didn’t know what to do,” Knox said.

Tucholsky’s injury is a possible torn ligament that will sideline her for the rest of the season, and she plans to graduate in the spring with a degree in business. Her home run sent Western Oregon to a 4-2 victory, ending Central Washington’s chances of winning the conference and advancing to the playoffs.

“In the end, it is not about winning and losing so much,” Holtman said. “It was about this girl. She hit it over the fence and was in pain, and she deserved a home run.”

Let’s Play Ball!

Zack @ Shortstop & Reilly @ 2nd Base

Baseball started this weekend and I could not be more excited…My twins moved up this year to Triple A Little League. Now the kids pitch 100% of the game (No coach intervention) and they get to steal bases & slide. It’s like real baseball. I’m lucky my boys get to be on the same team – VERY Lucky.
When my kids started sports, I had friends & coworkers & even strangers say “Man your life is over…you’ll be going to sports all the time.” Well they were partially right – I am at a sporting event all the time year round – BUT nothing could not be better then watching my kids play. Whether it’s baseball, soccer, basketball or golf, I cannot get enough of it.
I am so lucky that for the past 6 years I have been able to coach or assistant coach and that the kids have always been on the same team. Baseball is the best though! Usually you get pretty good weather & my kids really shine. Zack pitches & Reilly catches (Not much is cooler than watching Zack throw a strike & Reilly catch it!) or Zack dominates at shortstop & Reilly plays 1st or 2nd base. And on offense Reilly is the big hitter (5 for 5 during this weekend’s tourney) & Zack hits & runs faster than anyone. Their team this year only has one extra player so everyone gets lots of playing time.
We also hit the golf course three times this weekend & they get a bit better each time. We braved a bit of rain & cold, but they really liked it a lot.
So as Spring starts to slowly move in, I could not be happier & more thrilled to watch the kids play ball! My life is not over.
